About Ekhaya Clay

Ekhaya clay was born from a desire to create pieces that feel lived-in from the moment you first touch them.

Each vessel, bowl and mug is shaped by hand in small batches, embracing the natural textures and gentle imperfections that make handmade work deeply personal and human.

Inspired by the sundrenched and pristine coastline - the soft palette of sand and seafoam, the rhythm of the tide, the weathered beauty of driftwood and seashells. These elements guide our forms, colours and finishes.

But the heart of our work is Ekhaya - the feeling of belonging, grounding and comfort.

Each piece is created to invite you to slow down, savour small rituals, and build a home that feels like a sanctuary.

Meet the Maker

Ekhaya means home — and that’s where our story begins. Born in South Africa, shaped in Australia, Ekhaya Clay is the work of artist Dee Debney, who brings her small‑town roots, African heritage, and lifelong love of creativity into every piece.

These ceramics are more than objects — they’re stories of culture, belonging, and soul.

Now crafted on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, each piece is shaped by coastal calm and the spirit of home. Ceramics with culture, soul, and a touch of the sea.”

The Making Journey

Each of my collections begins with the landscape around me.

I draw inspiration from the shifting seasons of the Sunshine Coast — the soft coastal light, tidal textures and scenery, and the earthy tones of the hinterland.

These natural elements guide my palette, my forms, and the feeling behind each piece, allowing the environment to shape the story I tell through clay.
